Welcome Message

It is my pleasure to welcome you through the net to the Department of Theriogenology, College of Veterinary Medicine, Michael Okpara University of Agriculture, Umudike.The word Theriogenology was derived from the three ancient Greek words therio, gen (genesis) and ology which mean beast, creation and study respectively such that in a very simple language, Theriogenology denotes study of animal reproduction. Reproduction is an indispensable human and animal act crucial to continuous/persistence of human and animal on earth. An animal species that fails to reproduce is prone to going into extinction. Therefore, promotion of fertility in food, farm, domestic and companion animals are the primary essence of Theriogenology.

The Department was under Veterinary Surgery and Reproduction from inception in 2008 and was created as Department of Theriogenology in 2015. It is saddled with responsibilities of providing teaching and conducting research in areas of Theriogenology essentially for training and impacting skills to Veterinary medical students especially at the Clinical levels on all aspects of animal reproduction that include Veterinary Andrology, Veterinary Gynaecology, Veterinary Obstetrics and Reproductive Biotechnologies (such as Artificial Insemination, oestrus synchronization, multiple ovulation and embryo transfer).

These courses cover most animal species ranging from food/farm and domestic to laboratory animal species with the primary aim of facilitating their use for the purposes of providing animal protein for human consumption, recreation, companionship and other associated utilities.

The Department is endowed with competent and dedicated academic and other supporting staff. The postgraduate programme of Department commenced in 2015 and offers Master of Veterinary Science (MVSc) and Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) degrees in the following areas of specialty (i) Veterinary Andrology and Artificial Insemination, (ii) Veterinary Gynaecology, (iii) Veterinary Obstetrics and (iv) Reproductive biotechnology. Objective of the PG program is to produce graduates at the MVSc and PhD levels who shall be able to contribute towards development of highly skilled and specialists in the areas of Theriogenology required for advancement of Veterinary practice in Nigeria and for the advancement of animal reproduction in food/farm animals and pets in particular for the overall benefit of human.
