VSR 421 Anaesthesiology 3.0 Units
Introduction, Anaesthetic techniques, anaesthetic equipment, uses of anaesthetic equipment, pre-anaesthetic medication, induction of anaesthesia, endotracheal intubation and maintenance of anaesthesia, artificial ventilation (IPPV), fluid therapy, cardiopulmonary function and thermoregulation, patient monitoring, recovery from general anaesthesia, regional and local anaesthesia, anaesthesia in small ruminant, large animals, laboratory animals, wild animals and birds, post-operative management, pain and its management in animals.

Surgical procedures of the head, neck, eyes, ear, upper and lower respiratory systems, pharynx, larynx, trachea, caesarean section in horses, cattle, camel, donkey, sheep, goat and pig. Abdominal wall; mammary gland surgeries, urogenital system, hernias. Lameness; causes, classifications and clinical signs of lameness, examination of animals for lameness, definition, diagnoses and management of various conditions of lame conditions

B. POST GRADUATE PROGRAMME
The Postgraduate programme of Department of Veterinary Surgery and Radiology aims at providing advance training of qualified veterinarians in specialised areas of Veterinary Surgery and Radiology.
OBJECTIVE
Objective of the program is to produce graduates at the Master of Veterinary Science (MVSc) and Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) levels that shall be able to contribute towards development of highly skilled and specialists in the areas of veterinary surgery and Radiology required for advancement of veterinary practice in Nigeria.
ADMISSION REQUIREMENT
To qualify for admission into the MVSc programme of the Department of Veterinary Surgery and Radiology the applicants must have obtained Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM) degree from this university or any other university recognised by the Senate with a CGPA of 3.00 on a 5 points scale or 2.5 on a 4 points scale. For PhD programme, a candidate shall have obtained an MVSc degree after passing relevant taught courses and research from this university or its equivalent from any other university recognised by the Senate in relevant disciplines (Veterinary Surgery or Radiology) with a CGPA of 4.00 on a 5 points scale or 3.00 on a 4 points scale.
DURATION OF THE PROGRAMME
For full time MVSc students, the program shall be for a minimum of 4 semesters and a maximum of 6 semesters. For part time students, the duration of the MVSc program is a minimum of 6 semesters and maximum of 8 semesters. For PhD, a minimum of 6 semesters and maximum of 10 are required for full time while a minimum of 8 semesters and maximum of 12 semesters are required for PhD part time student.
REQUIREMENT FOR AWARD OF THE DEGREE
To qualify for the award of MVSc degree, a student must have completed and passed courses totalling a minimum of 28 credit units excluding Thesis of 12 units. For a PhD award, a student must have completed and passed all the courses work of 36 credit units, presented and passed the two seminars, and also written and passed a dissertation of 18 credit units.

COURSE SYNOPSIS
CVM 800 Thesis 6 Units
Each MVSc students is required to carry out an approved research project in his/her area of study leading to a dissertation to be examine externally.
CVM 801 Biometrics 3 Units
Sample, sampling, sample size determination, data collection, analysis; test of hypothesis and other biostatistical parameters that are necessary for interpretation of results, Data archiving.
CVM 802 Computer Applications in Veterinary Research 2 Units
Computer hardware and software, operating systems, Veterinary software packages, modelling, use of spreadsheet in Veterinary Medicine, presentation of scientific reports and e-Research.
CVM 803 Research Methodology and Scientific Writing 3 Units
The philosophy of research, development of research protocol, research types and designs, ethics in research, technical report writing, poster presentation.
CVM 804 Seminar 2 Units
Two seminars presentation is made by students registered for MVSc programme. (Pre-research and Post-research).
VSR 810 Theatre Design and Management 2 Units
Introduction to rural and urban surgical theatre design with bias for acceptable floor space and free patient flow. Routine management of theatre and hospitalization facilities.
VSR 811 Instrumentation 2 Units
Detailed discussion on special surgical instruments in cardio-vascular, thoracic, renal, neural, ophthalmic, orthopaedic, gastrointestinal, genitor-urinary, dental and plastic procedures. Monitoring surgical devices. Laboratory exercises.
VSR 812 Advance Veterinary Anaesthesiology 3 Unites
Detailed classification of anaesthetic agents, pre-anaesthetic classification of small animals, small ruminants, large ruminants, equine, sub-human primates, porcine, reptiles and avian species. Use and monitoring of local, regional, dissociative and general anaesthesia in wild and domestic animals. Recognizing and management of anaesthetic crises. Laboratory classes in small ruminant and small animals.
VSR 813 Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery 3 Units
Discussion of surgical techniques, biased for cosmetic outlook in companion animals and sub-human primates. Application of these techniques in large animals. Surgical management of congenital and acquired defects with emphasis on pedicle and free skin grafts.
VSR 814 Food Animal Soft Tissue Surgery 3 Units
In-depth discussion of common traumatic and nontraumatic surgical problems in cattle, small ruminants and pigs. Surgical management of the above along with post-surgical management of routine and emergency surgical problems in food animals. The cost-benefit of various surgical managements is emphasized.
VSR 815 Equine Soft Tissue Surgery 3 Units
Cranial and caudal abdominal laparatomies in management of gastro-intestinal obstructive and traumatic disorders. Elective surgical procedures including normal and cryptorchid Orchidectomy, management of congenital and acquired defects and post-surgical management of routine and emergency surgeries. Laboratory exercises are carried out using donkeys.
VSR 816 Surgery Clinics 2 Units
Clinical examination of small and large animal patients and identification of primary or referred surgical cases. SOAP approach to management of surgical cases, management and detailed documentation and follow-up of cases. Presentations of rare ones at surgical seminars.
VSR 817 Advanced Diagnostic Imaging 3 Units
Detailed discussion of normal radiographic, Ultrasonographic and C-T scan of body organs in small animals, sub-human primate and small ruminants. Radiographic evaluation of large animal extremities. Laboratory exercises in production of diagnostic radiographs and Ultrasonographic pictures. Evaluation of normal and pathologic images.
VSR 820 Advanced Small Animal Orthopaedic Surgery 2 units
Routine and unusual causes of lameness in small animals and non-human primates. Physical and laboratory diagnosis of lameness, management by closed reduction and external fixation and open reduction and internal fixation. Evaluation of healing using radiographs. Complications of healing. Laboratory exercises.
VSR 821 Advanced Large Animal Orthopaedic and Lameness 3 units
Traumatic and non-traumatic cause of lameness in cattle, goat, sheep, horse and pig. Routine physical and laboratory diagnostic protocol. Management by closed reduction and external fixation. External fixative (coaptation) devices. Complications of healing. Laboratory exercises.
VSR 822 Cardiovascular Surgery 3 units
Diagnosis of congenital and acquired cardiac defects in small animals. Uses of routine incision instruments and laser beam in the managements of cardiac disorders. Advancements in management of cardio-pulmonary problems and discussed. Laboratory exercises in cardio-pulmonary traumatic management.
VSR 823 Ophthalmic Surgery 3 Units
A review of anatomy of the globe and adnexia in animals. Ophthalmic traumatology and management. Management of ophthalmic congenital defects. Diagnosis and surgical management of cataract, glaucoma, corneal ulcers, staphyloma and blepharoplastic problems in companion animals. Laboratory exercises.
VSR 824 Organ Transplantation 2 Units
Transplantation immunology, organ typing for major and minor compatibility circumventing, allogenic rejection. Renal and osseous allogenic transplantation. Laboratory exercises.
VSR 825 Advanced Clinical Oncology 3 Units
Tumour classification, known aetiologies and diagnosis. Tumour staging. Tumour immunology. Chemotherapeutic approach to management of soft tissue tumours in combination with surgery and radiotherapy. Osteogenic sarcomas; diagnosis and management.
VSR 826 Problems in Surgery 2 Units
A student identifies a surgical problem in small or large animal patients and writes-up a review or recent advances in management of such problems.
