In line with the mission of Michael Okpara University of Agriculture, Umudike (MOUAU) which is to provide high quality practical training to students in order to become professionally competent and confident persons capable of self-employment; to develop environmental-friendly and people-sensitive technologies and to enhance the well-being of the people through extension and other interventions, thus serving the Nigerian people and the entire world, the College of Veterinary Medicine (CVM) took off in 2006 with the admission of first set of 100 level students for the Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM) in the 2005/2006 session. The Nigerian Universities Commission (NUC) granted the DVM degree interim accreditation in 2006.
The first accreditation visitation by the Veterinary Council of Nigeria (VCN) was in March 2007. Since then, the College has enjoyed an array of VCN accreditation visitations resulting in provisional accreditation in place by June, 2013. The first graduants of the College had to take the VCN Registration examinations in April 2014 because they had convocated in 2012 prior to VCN accreditation. The next two sets and the 2013/14 set were sworn in during the first (combined) oath-taking ceremony of 3rd Sept., 2014 – a landmark in the history of the Veterinary College at MOUAU. The first phase of the College building has been completed and is referred to as Block J. Building of the second phase commenced in July 2012, has been in use since September, 2014. Construction of a third phase will soon commence. The College has seven (7) Academic Departments and two (2) Units: College Teaching and Research Firm and a Veterinary Teaching Hospital (VTH).
